Shopify Pickup

Manage subscriptions that are collected from one of your Shopify pickup locations — move them between locations, or switch them to home delivery and back.

Overview

When local pickup is enabled for a location in your Shopify settings, customers can choose to collect their order instead of having it delivered. A subscription created that way is tied to that Shopify location, and every recurring order is collected there.

Zubs lets that change afterwards. From the customer portal or the contract detail page, a subscription can move:

  • from one pickup location to another
  • from pickup to home delivery
  • from home delivery to pickup

:::info Not the Same as Custom Pickup Locations Shopify pickup uses the locations in your Shopify settings and is chosen at checkout. Custom Pickup Locations are locations you define in Zubs and the customer chooses on the product page, before checkout. A subscription uses one system or the other, and the portal shows the controls for whichever applies. This article covers Shopify pickup. :::

There is nothing to switch on in Zubs. The controls appear as soon as your shop has a location that can serve the subscription.

Which Locations Are Offered

A location appears in the picker when both of these are true:

  1. Local pickup is enabled for it in your Shopify shipping and delivery settings.
  2. It can supply every product in the subscription. A location that covers only part of the subscription is not offered, since the whole order is collected in one go.

Stock is judged per product:

The ProductOffered at a Pickup Location
Doesn't track inventoryAlways
Tracks inventory and continues selling when out of stockAlways
Tracks inventory and stops selling when out of stockOnly where that location has stock on hand

:::info Slightly Stricter Than Checkout Zubs reads stock at the location itself, so a product checkout would offer because it can be transferred in from elsewhere doesn't count here. The effect is that a workable location is occasionally left out — never that an unusable one is offered. Shopify checks the location again when the change is saved, so one it won't accept is refused rather than written to the subscription. :::

Delivery Cost

Pickup is always priced at 0. Home delivery needs a shipping rate, and that rate comes from your delivery profiles, resolved for the address the order will go to. The rate is always chosen from the resolved list before anything is saved.

Customer Portal

On the subscription detail page, the delivery row carries a delivery icon next to the current pickup location or address. It opens Change delivery method, which lists the choices as one set:

  • Delivered to you — Home delivery
  • Collect it yourself — each eligible pickup location with its address and, where Shopify has one configured, a readiness estimate ("Usually ready in 2 hours")

Switching to a pickup location. The customer selects it and confirms. It applies to every future order.

Switching to home delivery. Confirming shows a prompt on the card — "Add a delivery address to finish switching to home delivery." The customer opens the address form from there, enters or picks an address, and selects a delivery option. The subscription stays on pickup until both are saved, so it is never left with neither a pickup location nor an address.

A customer already on home delivery uses the same modal to edit their address — Edit address opens the address form.

The switcher appears when at least one location can serve the subscription, or when the subscription is already on pickup. Otherwise the shipping address pencil is on the row as it is elsewhere. Subscriptions on local delivery are left alone.

Merchant Portal

  1. Go to Subscriptions and open the subscription.
  2. In the Customer card, find the Delivery section. It names the pickup location for a subscription that's collected, and shows the delivery address for one that ships.
  3. Open the menu next to the heading and choose Change delivery method.

The modal offers:

  • Home delivery — pick which of the customer's saved addresses to use. Zubs resolves your delivery profiles' rates for that address and lists them under Shipping rate. Picking a different address resolves the rates again. Choose a rate, then Save.
  • Pick up at — the eligible locations for this subscription. Select one and Save.

Home delivery is offered when the customer has at least one saved address. If they have none, use Manage addresses on customer page to add one to their Shopify profile first.

Support can do everything the customer can from here — move a subscription onto pickup, between pickup locations, or back to home delivery.

What Gets Recorded

Every change writes a Delivery method changed entry to the subscription timeline, so the contract page shows when a subscription moved and in which direction.

Troubleshooting

The delivery-method control isn't there

  • The subscription uses Custom Pickup Locations — Change pickup location applies there instead.
  • The subscription is on local delivery, which this switcher leaves alone.
  • No pickup-enabled location can supply everything in the subscription, and the subscription isn't already on pickup. See Which Locations Are Offered.

The control is greyed out

Cancelled subscriptions can't be changed. In the customer portal, neither can paused ones.

"No pickup location can currently supply everything in this subscription."

Every pickup-enabled location is missing at least one of the subscription's products. The all-or-nothing rule is deliberate — a pickup order is collected in one go. Add stock at the location, or set the products that stop selling when out of stock to continue selling.

"We couldn't load the pickup locations just now."

The list couldn't be fetched. This is distinct from an empty list, and the subscription is untouched — try again in a moment.

Saving a pickup location fails with a reason from Shopify

Shopify checks the location when the change is saved and names the reason, which the merchant portal shows in the error toast. Pick a different location; nothing was written to the subscription.

A customer says they chose home delivery but nothing changed

Switching off pickup finishes only once an address and a delivery option are saved. If they closed the address form before selecting a delivery option, the subscription is still on pickup. Have them reopen Change delivery method, choose home delivery, and complete the address step.
